GIACOMO MORENGO

**************************

The estate of Giacomo Marengo is located on the hills between Arezzo and Siena in Tuscany, and has 149 acres under cultivation. The Le Tornaie vineyard lies high on the hillside near an ancient Etruscan furnace about 1,500 feet above sea leve. Because of the altitude, the young buds are prone to suffer early spring frosts, thereby limiting ultimate grape production (but improving the quality of the wine!).

Giacomo Marengo "Stroncoli"

The Stroncoli vineyards are located on land that surrounds an ancient  Etruscan villa with a view of the beautiful Senesi lime cliffs. The production of this wine was reduced by a late spring frost but with a dry summer and fresh September, the grapes matured well. The result:  big, rich, full aromas and flavors of dark red berry fruit, backed by suggestions of chocolate, tar and vanilla.  Solid in structure yet soft around the edges, it is deep, complex and truly satisfying.

RECENT VINTAGE 1998
86 - "Fascinating aromas of cherries and currants, with hints of toasted oak. Medium to full-bodied, with firm tannins, medium finish. A bit austere and dry.  Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2003. 800 cases made." Wine Spectator November 15, 2001

RECENT VINTAGE 1997
91  - "The 1997 Stoncoli (is) a proprietary blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Sangiovese. A sensational nose of cedar, melted licorice, black currants, and vanilla jump from the glass of this full-bodied, intense, complete wine. Pure, nicely layered, and exceptionally rich, with no hard edges, it should drink well for 10-12 years, perhaps longer." Robert Parker 12/31/02
