Sequillo is a latin description for an arid, dry place of great purity, which is what the Swartland region in South Africa’s western cape is all about.
This project started as a venture that focuses on the limited production of one wine, which has now expanded to two. These wines are vinified exclusively from Southern Rhone grape varieties they are particularly suited to the Swartland climate.
The varieties of this project include Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache. In future they intend to experiment with grape varieties from Greece and southern Italy as they are in search of varieties which retain acidity and freshness in the Swartland climate. The project also produces a white from old vine Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Roussanne.
Sequillo is a venture owned in 50/50 partnership between The Sadie Family and the Cornel Spies Family Trust. These two families have a long standing history in wine and came together because of the love for wine and the individual terroir of the Swartland region. The vineyard holding comprises 8 organically farmed hectares with 2 newly planted hectares which they intend to develop and refine. Most of the existing vineyards are farmed in the goblet system “Bush vine” and they intend to continue this age-old practice.
The aim of the project is to produce wines which are unique and honest and rather display minerality as apposed to more opulent flavors.
